George S. Mickelson Trail

Bed and Breakfast Lodging
Hill City - South Dakota
Central in the Black Hills National Forest
Near Mount Rushmore

RAILS TO TRAILS

Yes, Mountains To Prairies Bed and Breakfast is located along the popular
MICKELSON TRAIL
and near South Dakota's great attractions, including Mount Rushmore,
Custer State Park, mountain lakes and scenic drives . . .
not to mention an abundance of interlaced wilderness trails
offering exciting fluctuations in altitude akin to a roller coaster ride,
affectionately referred to as breathtaking views.

Thankfully, the kind of happiness stirred up by the deep and wild beauty of the Black Hills, by the pure freshness of it, can also be enjoyed along a more even plane. Biking, hiking, running and even horseback riding are much loved activities of all ages, all along the 112+ miles of the easily accessible Mickelson Trail. Mountains To Prairies, in Hill City, is in the Heart of the Hills, where Trail enthusiasts can head out either direction on day trips, by foot or on one or the other kind of saddle. (Bicycles can be rented just a few blocks from us, and Trail Rides are available right up the road.) Needless to say, opportunity is there for imagination to configure as many adventures as your time allows.

An added luxury for our Trail guests is that Mountains To Prairies is within easy walking distance of everything Hill City offers. Historic downtown provides a pleasing array of delicious foods, fine art and specialty shops, such as Jon Crane Art Gallery and Black Hills Institute of Geological Research (Everything Prehistoric Gift Shop). Equally close is the 1880 Train on Railroad Avenue, which travels the path of rich local history, of which the bed of the Mickelson Trail was once an essential part.

TWO DISTINCTIVE SUITES, each privately situated, are offered.
Both suites feature antique and unique furnishings, small refrigerators,
satellite hd tv/dvd/vcr, internet, cove heat and AC, plus ceiling fans.

The Log-Accented Suite, Bluma Madle, has a Master Room highlighting a Victorian oak queen pillowtop bed. The private full bath has a soothing airjet bathtub. In addition to comfortable seating in the Master Room, this suite has a front sitting area, with a desk, and a log loft Bear Den equipped for sleepy kids to enjoy indoor camping. In the absence of children, it is a useful place for extra storage.

The ground level Knotty Pine Cabin-Style Suite, Chessie Lees Peas, has a personal entrance, private full bath, an extra vanity outside the bath, a bay view pellet stove and a queen pillowtop master bed of rough-sawn vertical beams with knotty headboard. Another amenity is a cozy Nook with a cypress twin bed, handy for at least one little sleepyhead, or an adult. New with this suite is the upper level Tree House Loft, an optional space which can sleep two people on a full-size pillowtop bed, and includes a half bath. This allows Chessie Lees Peas to accommodate up to five guests of one party.

(Bicycles may be secured to the log railing on the covered porch.)

In-house, Smiling Bear Antiques Shop and Espresso Bar extend variety and warmth to our Trail guests. But, if you have left the Trail feeling hot and dusty, Smiling Bear can whir up a cooling frappe for you.

From the mountains to the prairies, come to the Heart of the Hills . . .
Make our place your venturing off point!
